La Muda / The Mute is a homecoming and a rekindling. This solo exhibition from Mexican-American printmaker, Emily Gonsalez, marks the return to her printmaking after having not exhibited for more than two decades.
Upon moving back to Southwest Texas to care for her aging parents, her passion for creating art would lie dormant for years. In this new body of work, Gonsalez excavates her personal histories and landscapes to coax images that resonate with and question her changing interiority.
Printmaking is as much the art of applying pressure as it is the art of knowing when to release it. An art of letting go. What results is a collection of works on paper that is multimodal. Utilizing techniques such as chine collé and collage, woodcuts, and hand-colored etchings, she realizes a range of subjects from the abstract to the homo-erotic. Fractal as much as they are kaleidoscopic, Gonsalez's new work in La Muda / The Mute is her response to a period which continues to test the boundaries of the body.
